Brecon Under 13

SUNDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2009

Builth RFC 0 - Brecon RFC 27

Ideal playing conditions and strong support for both sides set the scene for this match. Brecon U13s had not played a match since early December 2008, so a considerable challenge lay in front of them.

From the kick off, Brecon took the game to Builth Wells dominating territory and possession. Within 5 minutes Brecon scored its first try. Following an excellent display by the back division, a ruck formed and scrum half Huw Prothero was quick to punch through the defence before popping the ball to Kieran Deacon who scored the try. Huw Prothero converted.

Against the run of play, Brecon was suddenly found themselves defending in their own 22metre area. Through dogged determination, defence was turned in to attack as Kieran Deacon emerged with the ball. He ran through everyone in his path beating all attempted tackles and made it to within 5m from the try line before passing the ball to James Leushke who was in support and ran in the try.

The third try in the first half came as a result of an impressive break from Grant Bragg. Well supported by the Backs, he passed the ball out allowing centres Sean Hennigan and Owain Nicholls to skilfully feed the ball to winger Nicholas Jones who ran in the try.

Leading up to half time, the forwards kept the game tight with notable piercing runs from Tom Soulsby, Ryan Gould and Tom Hughes. James Hosie also made impressive and impacting runs and tackles as full back. His efforts were remarkable particularly as he was playing out of position.

The second half was slightly better contested by Builth Wells, yet Brecon still managed to score a further 2 try’s. Lewis Lewis scored on the wing with a determined sprint over 15 metres and Huw Prothero scored the second after picking the ball up from the back of a 5 metre scrum and blasting through to score.

All of the team displayed outstanding commitment, determination and passion throughout the match. In the dying minutes of the game, they held off wave after wave of attack from the opposition to prevent the consolation try from being scored.

The match was a pleasure to watch and all players are congratulated for their excellent display of team work and selfless commitment.

Final Score Brecon 27 - Builth Wells 0
