SUNDAY 13 SEPTEMBER 2009

Builth Wells U 14 - 7 Brecon Under 14 17

The first match of the season for BRFC U14s was held against local rivals in Builth Wells. The weather was hot and without wind, so it was agreed to play 3 periods of 20 minutes to allow the players suitable rest and re-hydration stops.

From the start, the game was very close with equal forward play and the occasional half break from the backs. Historically, these 2 sides usually contest a tight and well fought battle, but one which is always played in excellent spirit and sportsmanship. The deadlock was broken deep in to the first period when flanker; Grant Bragg won line-out ball passing accurately to scrum half Hugh Prothero.
Hugh kicked neatly over the opposition in to space forcing them back. Following a handling error by a Builth Wells player, winger Nicholas Jones was quick to mop up and sprinted 40 metres to score the first try.

The second period started similar to the first with fierce battling by both packs. After 5 minutes of play, Builth conceded a penalty which was quickly taken by Hugh Prothero who off loaded to Number 8 Tom Salisbury. Tom ran through a number of players to score the second try impressively. With the second conversion also being missed, the score stood at 10 - 0.

As this match continued to unfold, both sides played bravely with Brecon displaying passionate and determined defence. Towards the end of the period, Tom Salisbury made a good break from a defensive ruck and passed the ball to Grant Bragg who then gained 40 metres with a determined sprint.

The final period saw Builth scoring a try early on which was well converted to set the score at 10 - 7. Once again, a fierce battle took place with both sides competing admirably. After 10 minutes of close play, Kieran Deacon made a break from a defensive ruck and passed neatly to Grant Bragg who sprinted 40 metres to score the third Brecon try. Ryan Gould converted with a super
kick.

The final 5 minutes was played with spirit from both sides with the score
remaining the same.

This was a fantastic team effort. Kieran Elliott played out of his usual position of hooker as the fly half and made an impressive contribution. Later in the match Kieran reverted back to hooker and Ryan Gould moved to centre. Ryan also made an impact, particularly with his tackling. Sean Hennigan, in this triad of changes, stood in as fly half and similarly performed very well.

The team is congratulated for its display of outstanding performance against
an equally matched side in difficult conditions. Next week - Abercrave away!
Keep it up boys.
Final score Builth Wells 7 - Brecon 17
