SUNDAY
4th October 2009
Treharris
Under 14 - 60 Brecon Under 14- 33
This
match was played in good conditions at Treharris and in good spirit.Once
again, Brecon U14s displayed excellent passion against a stronger side.
The first 2 tries of the match were scored early by Treharris; within
10 minutes, Brecon were 12 - 0 behind. After a period of pressure by
the team, a Treharris line out in the their 22 metre zone was judged
to have been thrown illegally and Brecon opted for a scrum. In a well
worked move, Number 8 Tom Salisbury picked up from the base of the scrum
and ran over the gain line before passing to Scrum Half Hugh Prothero
who ran in the first Brecon try. Ryan Gould converted well.
The game entered in to a period of tight play by both sides until Kieran
Elliott made an excellent break gaining 40 metres. A line out
lead to an effective driving maul and a quick ruck. Tom Salisbury appeared
from the base with the ball and powered over to score the second Brecon
try. Ryan Gould, in excellent kicking form, converted to set the score
at 12 - 14.
Despite some dogged and determined play by the Brecon forwards, Brecon
conceded another try which was not converted with the score standing
at 17 - 14. As the end of the first half approached, Brecon was awarded
an attacking scrum near the half way line. Fly Half Kieran Elliott received
the ball and kicked accurately in to space. Centre Grant Bragg was quick
to chase the ball and won it to score the third Brecon try. With the
try again being converted by Ryan Gould, the team were 21 - 17 points
ahead at half
time.
The start of the second half left Brecon shell shocked as Treharris
scored 4 tries in quick succession all of which were converted. Within
10 minutes, Brecon found themselves 45 - 21 behind. To their absolute
credit, the team did not drop their heads. The Lads dug in
and gave their all. In the 20th minute, a Brecon penalty was awarded
in the Treharris 22. Hugh Prothero was quick to take the penalty whilst
the opposition were sleeping and passed to Tom Salisbury who ran in the
fourth Brecon try. Hugh Prothero converted leaving the score at 45 -
28.
Brecon continued to apply the pressure and keep the forward momentum.
Inthe 25th minute, Brecon was awarded another penalty in the Treharris
22. Hugh Prothero passed the ball to flanker Tom Hughes who gained
ground. With strong support from the forwards, particularly Tom Salisbury
and Callum Reeve, Callum eventually emerged and ran in the fifth try.
With less than 5 minutes to play, the score tightened at 45 - 33. With
just Brecon 15 players and no subs against a larger Treharris squad,
exhaustion took its toll on the team. Treharris scored another 3 tries
in the last part of the match with the final score standing at Treharris
60
- Brecon 33.
The score line does not reflect what was an excellent effort
by Brecon U14s. Even when the team fell behind heavily they raised their
game and showed true grit, determination and spirit. The referee congratulated
the team and also commented that their discipline was second to none.
Everyone should be proud of themselves.
