Brecon
R.F.C. Under 15 Round Robin
Brecon v Abercraf v Builth Wells
.
After a gap of six weeks without playing due either to the abysmal weather or
unreliable fixtures Brecon Under 15 team entertained both Abercrave and Builth
on Parc de Pugh in a 'round robin'.
Brecon played Abercrave in the first match and began with a bang when the pack
won good possession to feed the back line; Richie Eliott timed his pass to perfection
to put Brett Woodyatt away for a clinical try, the first of three. The same combination
led to the second try and Brecon looked really dangerous when moving the ball
wide. Woodyatt's third score was a DIY effort when he outflanked the desperate
defence to cross in the corner. Jonathan James got on the score sheet with a
typically powereful thrust. All four conversions failed.
Throughgout the game the Abercrave players tackled very well and their forwards
provided spirited opposition. The try which they scored was deserved reward for
a gutsy performance, but the final score of 20 points to 5 was a fair relection
of a game in which forwards and backs worked well together in attack and defence.
In the second match Abercrave played Builth and, although they tackled bravely
until the end, there were clear signs of tiredness and the Builth forwards were
completely dominant. Builth made full use of their forward bulk and the pace
of their backs to run in 5 tries of which 4 were converted, one being a gem when
Nicky Dixon broke away to perform a splendid one-two with a centre to score.
The 33 - nil scoreline made no allowance for Abercrave's valiant effort.
Thus local rivals Brecon and Builth met in the last match. The game lived up
to expectations, as Builth exerted strong forward pressure in the early stages,
but gradually the massive efforts of Robson Blake, Rees Jenkins and Cellan Harris
in the Brecon front row tilted the balance in Brecon's favour. However, despite
some strong running from Luke Bowen at fullback Brecon were able to score only
once - inevitably through Brett Woodyatt; the successful conversion by Arran
Games proved crucial, for Builth also scored a try, but the conversion dropped
a metre short. In the dying seconds of the game ("Last play" was the
cry!) Chris Dixon almost pulled the iron from the fire with a delicate chip and
chase which ended to his evident dismay in the tiniest of knock-ons. Both teams
gave their all in this excellent match.
The over all picture of the day was that all three teams thoroughly enjoyed themselves
and that skill levels were remarkably high considering the recent lack of match
practice. Tenacity in the tackle will have given all coaches a nice Christmas
present, with a bonus for Brecon especially whose desire and ability to use the
width of the pitch is exemplary.
Brecon RFC: Luke Bowen, Rhodri Owen (Rhys Davies), Brett Woodyatt, Richie Elliott,
G. Jones; Arran Games, Tom Rowlands; Robson Blake, Rees Jenkins, Cellan Harris
(Callum Duncan); Jake Thompson, Zac Thompson (Ieuan Jones); Eifion Phillips,
Tom Lewis (capt.); Jonathan James.
