Brecon
RFC Under 15s
Sunday 14th February 2010
Brecon
RFC 45 - Aberdare RFC 20
Parc de Pugh in the February sunshine! What better place to be, especially
when watching a very fast and exciting match between Brecon and perhaps
their most powerful rivals, Aberdare? The encounter started with a bang
when the Brecon threequarters, taking full advantage of their speed and
dexterity, capitalised on excellent service from their half backs and
in the first minute swept all before them with Richie Elliott storming
over for a try which Luke Bowen converted. A second try, a near replica
of the first, soon followed, the scorer this time being Brett Woodyatt;
again Bowen converted.
Brecon then varied their approach; from a scrum Tom Rowlands chipped
cleverly over the pack for Dylan Lockwood to gather and leave the Aberdare
defence in tatters in scoring the third try; Bowen was again successful
with the conversion. Not content with his kicking success, Bowen seized
eagerly on a panic-stricken defensive kick by Aberdare and ran some sixty
metres to score Brecon's fourth which he proceeded to convert to bring
the score to 28 without reply.
Aberdare, however, were still a force to be reckoned with. Their pack
was well drilled and strong in the set piece and it was the forwards
who created the two tries which they scored just before the interval.
The first came from a penalty, when Brecon, as so often happens, were
caught napping and failed to stop a rumbling prop. Aberdare struck again
within minutes, this time squeezing over on the blind side of a scrum
to bring the half-time tally to 28 - 10.
Brecon took stock at the interval. Things were pretty even up front and
both sets of backs were tackling well and it was clear that greater effort
was required, if the score was to advance. From an untidy ruck Robson
Blake charged off to score yet another well deserved try and then Arran
Games, playing a much more varied game than he sometimes does, continued
the scoring from an astute kick ahead which bounced sweetly for him to
cross; Elliott converted to take Brecon to forty points.
Yet again Aberdare showed good fighting spirit and struck back with a
neat try from their inside centre - yet again when Brecon lost concentration.
The fireworks were not yet finished! Woodyatt scored his second try from
a chip and chase to establish a Brecon total of 45 and then Aberdare
wrapped things up with a threequarter try which, like all their tries
was unconverted.
This was a very satisfying performance by Brecon, all the more so because
all squad members were given game time. The team has many strengths and
on this occasion used them to the full; the key word was variety and,
as everyone knows, "variety is the spice of life"!
The match was firmly and very efficiently controlled by referee Tony
Davies.
