Brecon
RFC Under 15s
Sunday 1st November 2009
Brecon
RFC 19 - Abertillery RFC 17
The strongest influences on the recent match between the Brecon and Abertillery
Under 15 Teams were the the fact that, as the visitors were unable to field
a complete trained front row, scrums had to be uncontested and, in particular,
the fierce south-westerly wind. The static scrum does not allow the stronger
pack to prevail and so acts as a leveller. The much more powerful Brecon forwards
were unable to capitalise on superior strength and technique, which meant that
Abertillery must have felt that Santa Claus had come early, bearing an unexpected
share of possession.
The wind was well used by both sides in turn. A well-placed kick in the opening
minutes was chased by the Brecon pack and from the resultant maul a smiling Zac
Thompson emerged to score his first try for the club. Soon after Joe Sissons
made a midfield break and put Richie Elliott away on a characteristically powerful
run to score. Luke Bowen converted well from wide out to celebrate his return
from injury. The traffic was, however, not all in one direction and Brecon were
forced to tackle often and hard to contain the lively Abertillery centres. A
lapse in concentration allowed the visitors to score an unconverted try, a deserved
reward for their efforts against the wind. This stung the Brecon forwards into
more concerted action and Robson Blake crowned an excellent display with a try,
converted by Bowen, which brought the half-time score to 19 - 5.
Injury deprived Brecon of the powerful Jonathan James and Richie Elliott left
the field due to illness. This, added to the wind advantage enjoyed by the visitors,
put Brecon under serious pressure. The weakened defence faltered and Abertillery
snatched two tries in quick succession; the conversion of one of these brought
the score to 19-17. Once again, however, Brecon were at their best when fortune
seemed to have deserted them and the forwards stuck to their task admirably,
even when Eifion Phillips who had been seen everywhere on the field was injured.
The irrespressible Cellan Harris was hauled down inches from the whitewash, but
there was no further score in a hard fought and spirited game between two sides
which wanted to play Rugby, but were foiled to some extent by the wind and the
current over-protective laws of the game.
Referee Alan Taylor (Brecon RFC) controlled the game well, displaying the firmness
that is essential but not always evident!
