Brecon RFC Under 15s

Brecon 32 v Dowlais 0

An Encouraging Start.

Brecon R.F.C. Under 15 team began the season with a most encouraging performance against Dowlais on Parc de Pugh, taking full advantage of excellent weather and superb ground conditions.

From the outset it was clear that the team was determined to give of its best in attack and in defence. The backs showed great awareness in their passing movements, avoiding the cardinal sin of hanging on to the ball and not using their pace out wide. As a result three tries came in quick succession. The first was scored by centre Joe Sissons who made the first of several breaks and cut the defence to pieces to cross near the posts. Then came two tries for winger Dylan Lockwood who needed no urging to use his speed to finish off two movements, one instigated by the threequarters and the other inspired by the forwards. Sadly, all three conversion attempts failed and so the score at half time was Brecon 15 - Dowlais nil.

After the interval the Brecon coaches made a number of changes in order to give the whole squad game time. As so often happens, this led to some patchy play, but Brecon were not to be denied. First Richie Elliott, restored to the centre after a first half in the pack, sliced through the defence for an excellent try. Soon after the pack rumbled to the Dowlais line, continuing a move which began far out among the backs; Shaun Commee drove hard and made the ball available; Robson Blake picked up to cross for the fifth try. The scoring was topped off by another try for Dylan Lockwood who was in exactly the right place to benefit from a delicate angled kick by Arran Games and a fine conversion by Richie Elliott. Thus the final score was Brecon 32 - Dowlais nil.

Defensively, the home side maintained concentration for almost the whole match, missing very few tackles and winning a fair share of tight possession from a Dowlais pack which was very strong in scrum and lineout, but no match for Brecon as regards fitness and pace. Dowlais were thrown into confusion and resorted to territorial kicking, but here too Brecon coped very well, especially in the second half, playing with wind.

If Brecon can continue in this vein, this could be a very interesting season. The next fixture is away to Mountain Ash, which will provide another major challenge.

The Brecon coaches were very pleased with this effort. They were also anxious to pay tribute to the very competent referee whom Dowlais provided.
