Brecon RFC Under 15s

Sunday 18th October 2009

Hereford 5 - Brecon 35

On a fine morning against the splendid backdrop of Hereford Cathedral Brecon Under 15s began this match at great pace, but were guilty too often of gaining slow possession by use of their hands rather than their feet in broken play. Nevertheless the early pressure soon told and Arran Games scored the first of three tries, part of a performance of rare skill in which his running was matched by his kicking and tackling in defence. He also kicked the first of five conversions. However, Hereford were determined not to give up without a struggle and were more than a match for their guests in the ruck in the opening quarter. Their centres ran strongly and a good threequarter try followed, just reward for their efforts up to that point.

Unfortunately, ill discipline began to creep into the home side's play, perhaps due to their frustration at being frankly outclassed up front and bamboozled by Games. His second try was the result of a beautifully judged kick ahead which he gathered to cross between the posts and the third came from a break, with the centres running as decoys - whether they realised it or not! He then put in another kick down field which was eagerly chased by Joe Sissons and Dylan Lockwood who won the race to gather and score. The half-time score of 28 - 5 did Brecon justice.

In the second half Brecon made a number of experimental changes which, although they disrupted the flow of play to some extent, were justified in that the whole squad had some game time. Brecon added only one try, but it was a cracker! The Brecon forwards had become tired of being kicked and punched, losing captain for the day, Jake Thompson, with a badly cut ear, and so took matters into their own hands. Cellan Harris set off on a typical rampaging run; when he was brought down, Tom Rowlands was, as ever, at hand to feed Jonathan James before whom the defence parted like the waters of the Red Sea and the victory was sealed: 35 - 5 to Brecon.

This was another impressive performance by the Brecon team. The absence of several influential players failed to affect the desire and the ability to win and to win well. On this occasion they were met with a standard of sportsmanship which left something to be desired and it is greatly to their credit that tempers were controlled. There was a certain irony in the fact that the match was due to be followed by an Under 18 match sponsored by a Funeral Director!

Brecon RFC Under 15 XV: Rhodri Boggast; Rhys Davies, Dylan Lockwood, Joe Sissons, Ryan Jones; Arran Games, Tom Rowlands; Adam Price (Ieuan Jones), Callum David, Cellan Harris, Jake Thompson (capt.) (Jonathan James), Zac Thompson; Nick Dixon (Tom Lewis), Eifion Philips, Rees Jenkins.
