Brecon RFC Under 15s

Sunday 24th January 2010

Ystradgynlais :14 pts - Brecon 17 pts.

Neither team had played since the first week of December and so it was not really surprising that the opening stages of this encounter were a bit scrappy, to say the least. Brecon seemed over -excited at meeting one another again and gave away six penalties in the first ten minutes. For some strange reason the home side chose not to take any kicks at goal and thus Brecon were let off the hook. Neither team had forgotten how to tackle, however, and this was the most striking feature of the whole match, with Richie Elliott, Brett Woodyet and Arran Games setting up an inpenetrable mid-field.

When at last Brecon managed to string together a series of passes, they showed what they can do and should do more often; Jonathan James appeared in the middle of the move and crossed for an excellent try which was not converted. More of the same soon followed after some superb driving play from the pack and a second try, scored by Arran Games, again unconverted, was the reward. Their confidence buoyed up by these successes, the Brecon players took their feet off the pedals and Ystradgynlais snatched a scrambled try in the corner which was converted with a splendid kick.

Shortly after the re-start another defensive error let in the home side for a second try, again well converted, and Ystradgynlais were in front. This proved to be just what the doctor ordered as far as Brecon were concerned and a carbon copy of the first try followed, with Jon. James delivering the sucker punch. Arran Games converted this try to take the tally to 17 - 14 in favour of Brecon, which proved to be the final score.

Throughout the match the forward tussle was fairly even. The Brecon lineout improved steadily after a shaky start and Tom Lewis linked well with Tom Rowlands who delivered a very accurate service all morning. In the scrum Brecon were often under pressure, but held their own. It was in the loose play that the high fitness levels of the Brecon forwards stood out; the back row of Tom Lewis, Eifion Phillips and the extraordinary Robson Blake all had a field day. If the outside backs had made less heavy weather of passing movements and moved the ball wide more often and not as an afterthought, a much wider margin would have ensued.

Nevertheless, the match gave a lot of entertainment to the crowd, was well controlled and was played in excellent spirit.

Brecon Under 15 XV: Luke Bowen; Rhodri Owen (Rhys Davies), Richie Elliott, Brett Woodyet, Dylan Lockwood; Arran Games, Tom Rowlands; Robson Blake, Ryan Jones (Callum David), Rees Jenkins; Zac Thompson, Jake Thompson; Tom Lewis (capt.), Eifion Philips; Jonathan James.
