Monmouth RFC Under 16 V Brecon RFC Under 16
Monmouth 13 points - Brecon 36 points

The picturesque pitch at Monmouth is set amongst trees and
on a slight slope. Although the surface was soft there was
a northerly wind
which made life tricky for kickers and cold for spectators.
Within
the first 5 minutes Brecon created quick ball from a scrum and outside
half Jake Newman flicked a pass to winger Oscar Klappholz.
He drew his man and rapidly passed inside to centre Richard
Marsh. His good quick hands put right wing Rhodri Morris in space
and he
ran through and scored the first try of the game.
Minutes later Brecon attacked again and this time Jake Newman put
a cross field kick into the right hand corner for Aaeron Evans
to score.
Brecon’s lead was immediately cut following the re-start
as a rare moment of indiscipline gifted Monmouth a penalty.
Although the Brecon pack had a difficult period in the
set pieces they were magnificent in broken play. Tight
head prop, Jess Ashby,
who was magnificent throughout, took a short pass and
accelerated down the right wing, taking several Monmouth players with
him, he was brought down just short of the line but managed
to offload to Aaeron who scored Brecon’s
third try.
From the restart Monmouth showed spirit and attacked fiercely. Their
width gave their right wing the chance to score in the
corner bringing them deservedly back into the game.
With only minutes left in the first half Brecon won a scrum in
front of the Monmouth posts. Scrum half, Davey Herdman, who played
a great game, made a great arcing run around the scrum and burst
through to touch down under the posts. Jake Newman converted.
Monmouth started the second half with a long kick into Brecon territory
just yards from the right corner. Their wing grabbed the ball and
was tackled on the line by two Brecon players but managed to fall
forwards and score their second try.
Brecon’s speed and ability to adapt their game was now beginning
to tell on Monmouth and heads were going down when flanker David
(Dewi) Jenkins ripped the ball out of a ruck in mid field and sprinted
to score Brecon’s fifth try to the left of the posts.
Jake Newman converted.
With only minutes left, loose head prop Alex Moses, broke from
a ruck, chipped over the defence, chased and with a second kick
sent a grubber on between the posts. He won the race and dropped
on the ball and scored. Jake Newman converted. This was a very
good win for Brecon and resulted from a great team effort. Owen
Price, Dewi
Jenkins and Toby Vaughan showed athleticism
at the line out while Brecon Dan Bowen (4), Josh Davies (8), Jack
Jones (1) Chris Morgan Hughes (15), Billy Shepherd (13) and David
Shough (2) all played exceptionally well. Brecon’s coaches
Hugh Davies, Mark Newman and new coach Jon Watkins were satisfied
with their team’s performance although improvements can be
made during Training sessions on Thursdays and Sundays. The coaches
also commented that following a difficult period for the team involving
injuries and illness, it was most heartening to see the players returning
to the team, but also to their winning ways.
