Brecon
RFC Under 16 - 34 v Stoke-on-Trent RFC Under 16 - 32
Brecon
scored first in what was to be a ding dong match played in strong
breeze and on a fine very warm day . Jake Newman kicked a
perfect penalty. Stoke struck back almost immediately with a try
which was converted. Minutes later, after a strong Brecon attack,
Lloyd Davies intercepted Stoke’s pass and scored. Jake Newman
converted. In less than 5 minutes Stoke scored two unconverted tries
to give them a 17 points to 10 lead
Half time saw the Brecon coaches Mark Newman and Hugh Davies reminding
their team that they had 15 players and the forwards should get
the ball out quickly to the backs and play wider as they were allowing
Stoke to control the game on a narrow front.
Only 2 minutes into the second half, Stoke scored again but failed
to convert. Brecon began to use their backs and during open play
near the Stoke line, Jack Jones played a dummy, side stepped a
Stoke player to touch down. Jake Newman converted to bring Brecon
back into contention.
After the restart, Brecon took the ball rapidly towards the Stoke
line through an excellent passing move amongst the backs and Aaron
Evans scored in the corner to level the scores at 22 -22. Stoke came
back immediately and scored to re-establish their lead with an unconverted
try.
Brecon forwards were playing very well against bigger and heavier
opponents and during another excellent piece of open play Jake Newman
scored through his kick and chase. Jake Newman converted to give
Brecon a slender two point lead. Yet again, the irrepressible Stoke
team came back and scored, regaining the lead.
Brecon’s
forwards once again surged towards the Stoke line, winning a scrum
and getting the ball out quickly to Davey Herdman
who was fouled by an offside flanker. With a quick tap and go, Davey
went over the line to score. By this time Jake Newman was injured
and had left the field and Richard Marsh was playing number 10, and
although his touchline missed the right hand post Brecon won a rousing
game by 34 points to 32.
The Stoke players conducted themselves very professionally at all
times and their discipline was exemplary throughout the game. They
are a credit to their Club and to their coaches. Stoke’s
Coach, Geoff Tomlinson, spoke highly regarding the way both teams
conducted themselves. Stoke RFC also made 3 presentations, one
to the referee Neil Pruwit who at short notice made himself available
for the game. The second presentation was made by the coaching
Staff of Stoke RFC to their Man of the Match, Brecon Number 10
Jake Newman and the final presentation was the Stoke RFC Plate
to Brecon RFC.
