Rhondda and East Glamorgan District League Mountain Ash 2nd XV 17 - Brecon 2XV 27 Saturday 12th December
Within 5 minutes Brecon went behind to an early penalty but quickly replied with a penalty, converted by Gary Davies. Gary playing his first match in more than six months looked assured throughout and made an outstanding contribution to the team’s performance. Brecon then took control of the game with two well worked tries. Winger Matthew Watkins set up the position for the first try with a strong run which forced the Mount defence to give away a penalty. This was kicked to touch ten metres from the goal line. Gethin Thomas won good line out ball and a well organised drive saw flanker Howell Morgan claim the score as the pack surged over the line. Ten minutes later a carbon copy move resulted in captain, Alan Taylor claiming the score. With the half nearing its completion Brecon looked in complete control until Alan Taylor was harshly penalised on half way. One of the Brecon coaches “firmly” expressed his disbelief and received not just a ticking off from the referee but the home side were awarded a further ten metres. They kicked to the corner and constructed their own try off a driving line out. The conversion narrowed the deficit to just 3 points. It was important that Brecon reasserted themselves early in the new half and this they did with an excellent try. Outside Half, Chris Wilton made the initial break following the latest of many storming runs from Number 8 Owen Davies. Near the line Chris popped the ball up to supporting Gary Davies, who strolled over under the posts and converted. Within ten minutes Brecon went further ahead when Chris Wilton’s cross kick caused panic in the home defence and centre, Danny Thompson, took advantage to score. Davies again converted. With the game won Brecon eased up and Mountain Ash deservedly reduced the lead with a good try and conversion from their full back. Brecon’s win
was very satisfying as was the form their two young props Paul, Howe
and Tyrone Van Zyle. In spite of their
inexperience
they both performed outstanding well and will present selectors with
an interesting problem as they prepare for next weeks cup match against
Treherbert.
