SWALEC WRU National League Division 3 SE Saturday 21st February 2009 Llandaff North 13 - Brecon 12 Following a disappointing start to 2009 Brecon desperately needed to get something out of their visit to Llandaff North. Having won the corresponding home match in September, Brecon were looking to return to winning ways after three consecutive narrow defeats. Both sides were encouraged with the weather which was almost spring like after what seemed to be a long winter. In response to the conditions both sides tried to play an attractive brand of rugby. Brecon should have been favourites to win the match after their convincing win in their earlier meeting this season. However, recent results indicated that it would be a close match. Where Brecon’s winning form has deserted them Llandaff have started to put together a good string of results. It was that recent form and confidence or lack of it that proved to be the decisive factor. Brecon played well in patches but they were inconsistent. That inconsistency lead to them having to chase the game in the closing stages after having surrendered what was a good lead in a tight game. The fact that they just failed to overhaul the home side, which had made the most of their opportunities, was down to a number of factors. In recent weeks one factor has caused more problems for the team than any other. Too frequently they have given away penalties to surrender possession or offer the opportunity of points to the opposition. Saturday was no exception. Brecon scored two great tries from two of their young back line. Rob Price finished a great move which involved forwards and backs. Owen Morgan, not for the first time in recent weeks showed his pace and finishing power as he touched to score a try converted by Dan Edwards. This score gave Brecon the lead which they should have been able to hold onto but an indiscretion offered up a second penalty to Llandaff to add to their one converted try. This in the end proved to be the decisive score. Although losing for the second consecutive time by a single point, this
was a much more encouraging performance and will give coaches Martin
Keylock and Hefin Williams something to build on prior to their meeting
with Treorchy next Saturday.
