WRU National League Division 3 South East Saturday 5th April 2008

Brecon 22 – Penarth 27

In memory of Calvin Meredith a much respected former Treasurer and loyal servant to Brecon RFC, who died on the morning of the match, a minute’s silence was held.

When the game did start both sides competed strongly and an excellent game resulted despite the strong wind and rain. An early defensive error allowed Penarth’s full back Chris Roberts, who showed good pace, to run in for the first try which was converted by fly half Gareth Davies. Shortly later from a loose kick by Brecon a penalty was awarded for offside and this was again kicked by Roberts.

This early set back did not deter Brecon’s forwards who strongly committed to rucks and tackled bravely. Young prop Jack Herring in first start for Brecon Senior team coped well and improved as the game progressed. Penarth’s forwards were played a tight game with good control at the ruck and through fly half Davies were able to clear up field. Eventually Brecon made yardage and a penalty was awarded for not releasing which was kicked by full back Gari Davies.

Yet again, from a loose kick, Penarth were able to attack Brecon’s 22 and after good phases and handling their No.8 Forward Elliot Smith went over for a try which was converted. Brecon’s forwards, with second row Wyn Davies, superb in line out and loose play did not give up and Penarth were made to slow ruck ball illegally which resulted in a sin binning for tight head Gary Power.

At half time Brecon trailed by 3points to 17.

The omens were not good for the second half but No. 8 Owen Davies helped by his fellow forwards now started gaining good yards with phases of drives and secure ruck ball. So effective was their play that they got to the try line and prop Gareth Owens went over. However, the ball could not be grounded. The resulting scrum was collapsed and Brecon were awarded a penalty try converted by Davies.

Brecon were now back in the game and Owen Davies showed all his strength in going over for an unconverted try.

Brecon kept up the momentum but again a bad mistake in mid field allowed Penarth’s full back Roberts to run the length of the field from a defensive scrum to score.. Penarth’s fourth try of the day came from a similar mistake and again it was full back Roberts who showed his pace to go over.

Brecon’s forwards continued to press and they were rewarded when Gareth Owens went over for his try, converted by Gari Davies. This gave Brecon a well deserved losing Bonus point.

The game itself was a well contested. Penarth’s backs marshalled by fly half Gareth Davies showed their superiority, but if Brecon could have eliminated their mistakes this was a game they could have won.
