WRU National League Division 3 South East Saturday 23rd January 2010

Brecon 41 - Treherbert 3

For the first time in 2010 Brecon took the field following a period of inactivity due to bad weather which stretched back to 26th December. The period before that had hardly seen any action with only two games league having been played since the start of November. This then was almost a new start but with a history that meant that this game was a pressure match for both sides.

Brecon’s last league win was away at Threherbert on 26th September. That was their third win in the opening month of the season. Since then they have accumulated just a number of losing bonus points and a draw. With Treherbert matching them on three wins and being only seven points behind in the league it was essential that Brecon did not allow them to close the gap. It was also essential to make a new start on which confidence could be built. Therefore, at kick off there were a number of nervous faces on the field and amidst the spectators. That nervousness was soon quelled, for although it was obvious that there was some rustiness after so much inactivity, Brecon produced one of their best team performances of the season.

While the emphasis has to be on the way the team performed two newcomers to the Brecon squad deserve to be singled out for their contribution. Outside Half, Jared Rees, had a good all round game, picking up two tries and helping to create a third in the process. Flanker, Tom Daley, showed great pace and athleticism and although his name did not appear on the score card he helped create two of the tries, including what was undoubtedly the try of the match.

It was the forwards who created the first score. Ceri Morgan at Number 8 carried with pace and power in not just the opening phases but throughout the match. His early runs earned a scrum on five metres and with the Brecon front row of Alan Taylor, Gareth Owens and Jack Herring repeatedly destroying the Treherbert scrum the referee was left with no option other than to award a penalty try. Huw Baldwin converted.

Having got off to a good start, Brecon’s confidence grew and a penalty kick to the corner put Treherbert under great pressure. When the ball was worked to the backs Treherbert’s defence was already stretched and Jared Rees cut through a huge gap for an excellent try. Baldwin again converted.

Treherbert reduced the deficit when outside half Ross Harris kicked a penalty but they found it difficult to retain possession and create openings. They did, however, show spirit and when they held up a Gareth Owens charge just short of the line and scrambled the ball away they seemed to have earned themselves a period of rest bite. However, they were allowed no such luxury.

From deep in Brecon’s half flanker Tom Daley broke. He brushed aside the first attempted tackle and then his pace took him through the first line of defence. As the cover got to him on the visitors 22 he passed inside to fellow flanker Wyn Davies who in turn handed on to full back Owen Morgan who finished the move with a try in the corner.

The second half brought little change. Brecon increased their lead with a well struck Baldwin penalty. Then Huw Baldwin showed his class in midfield with a great break which set up the position from which allowed flanker Wyn Davies to charge through the defence to score a well deserved try.

Brecon’s effort seemed to wane at this point as the game started to become littered with injuries and mistakes but as the game drew towards the close Brecon finished in style.

Pressure on the home defence brought its reward when Jared Rees charged down an attempted clearing kick. He re-gathered the loose ball and sent the every present Owen Morgan away for the fifth try. Baldwin converted.

The final score again featured Owen Morgan again after he chased down a good Rees kick ahead. He tackled his opposite number on the visitors 22 and before any Treherbert support could arrive Jared Rees picked up the lose ball and scored between the posts. Baldwin once again converted to bring his points tally for the day up to 11 with four conversions and a penalty.

Brecon will be anxious to follow up this win with another good performance at Llandaff North next week before another break in the season, this time for the Six Nations Championship.
