Brecon
Youth XV 48 – Glyn Neath Youth XV 15
Brecon`s initial opponents were to be Abercwmboi in
a District Cup semi final but with their opponents being informed that
they had to prioritise a league match Brecon hosted Glynneath in a friendly.
It was obvious from the start that the visitors wanted to play running
rugby and use their powerful centre to break the Brecon defence. Whilst
this did happen it did not cause great concern as it was Brecon who took
the lead via a Gareth Davies penalty. This was followed by a try from
prop Jim Williams who barged his way over for a try which Davies converted.
However, Glynneath came back with a penalty of their own and a converted
try after their outside half broke through a weak defence. Just on half
time Brecon increased their lead via a converted try scored by Joshua
Hughes.
In the second half Brecon`s coaches changed several players to give all
a game. With fresh legs Brecon began to dominate and Osian Davies was
soon on the score sheet. Again from a line out close to the opposition
line Davies gathered the ball which was transferred to number 8 Alwyn
Lee who drove hard for the line before he and Darren Hughes combined
to score after a great drive from the forwards. Skipper Eifion Jones
had mar-shelled his players well and it was deserved that he scored after
a long meandering run saw him outpace the defence.
Glynneath quickly responded and caught the Brecon team sleeping. They
were awarded a penalty and quickly moved the ball right where their winger
showed great pace to score in the corner for an unconverted try. However,
Brecon had the last score through Darren Hughes - the Welsh under 18`s
International prop received the ball from a line out on the half way
line and with quick thinking went blind. This caught out the defence
and he sprinted unopposed to the try line. Gareth Davies rounded off
a great afternoon for him by converting all the tries scored and kicking
another second half penalty. This was the second consecutive Saturday
that Brecon Youth have played exceptionally well and provided the spectators
with good quality rugby. A wonder full performance by all the players.
Brecon will have another friendly at Penlan next Saturday against Mountain
Ash whilst they wait to hear when the semi final is rearranged
