Brecon Youth XV 39 – Gwernyfed Youth XV 5

Brecon Youth produced the performance of the season to date with an outstanding win against local rivals Gwernyfed. With everyone predicting a close match Brecon dumbfounded the pundits with an impressive display, particularly during the first half in which they scored four tries. Although the game was almost over as a contest by half time great credit should be awarded to both sides. They both contributed to a skilful, entertaining derby match, which was played in a truly sporting manner. In spite of the margin of defeat Gwernyfed showed great spirit and resilience particularly in the second half, during which they restricted Brecon to a single try.

Brecon took control early in the game when winger Aaron Nash crossed for a try. With Max Procter following this score up with two well taken penalties, Brecon grew in confidence. Scrum half Davy Herdman showed his eagerness to maintain the side’s momentum when he took a quick tap penalty. Running blind he sucked in the defence and put winger Ben Crockett in for the second try, which Max Procter converted.

Although stunned by Brecon’s opening, Gwernyfed showed that they were not prepared to just cave in and scored a good try of their own. A well judged cross kick created space and the visiting wing scored an excellent try in the corner.

This set back failed to derail Brecon’s momentum and they responded with what was the try of the match, although they were fortunate that a knock on in the build up to the score was not picked up by the referee. Max Procter fielded a kick on his own 22 and made a searing break to his opponents 22. Here he gained the support of the home pack and flanker Osian Davies finished the move with a try which Procter converted.

The final try of the half deservedly went to livewire scrum half, Davy Herdman. He broke blind from a line out and beat the cover. His try was again converted by Procter.

Leading by 35 points to five at half time Brecon must have been looking for an avalanche of points in the second half. The avalanche never materialised. Gwernyfed showed determination and no little skill to make life difficult for the home side and to create a much more even contest. Brecon did claim the only score when centre Eifion Jones cut through a tiring visitors defence on the 22. His try was again converted giving Max Procter a final tally of fourteen points.

For Brecon the local derby season continues next week with an away match at Builth Wells with Brecon hoping that they take their current form into that match having already lost narrowly to Builth earlier in the season.
