BRECON RFC MINI / JUNIOR ANNUAL AWARDS 2009

The end of another season brought together the whole of the Mini and Junior Section of Brecon RFC for the Awards Evening (Ages under 7 to Under 14). Each year the success of the Club’s Minis and Juniors seems to grow. This year was undoubtedly the club’s most successful season at this level with a high proportion of wins and many players representing District, Regional and the Welsh National Age Group teams.

A measure of the importance attached to the event by the Blues Region was the presence of Jamie Roberts (Blues, Wales and British Lions). Amidst a hectic schedule Jamie found time to accept an invitation to support the event, following up on his presence at the Club’s Mini Rugby Tournament, held in April. His unreserved support was undoubtedly the highlight of the evening. So many of the youngsters will hold the dream that one day they can follow in the footsteps of becoming not just an outstanding player but a humble and genuine personality who presents himself as a superb role model for all the Brecon players.

Jamie made the presentation of Player of the Year awards to:-

Under 8 Ben Griffin, Under 9 Josh Pritchard, Under 10 Ben Amphlett, Under 11 George Rees, Under 12 Rory Myles-Roberts, Under 13 Tom Salisbury, Under 14 Aaron Games.
The Mike Gittins Trophy was awarded to Tom Wood (Under 11)

For the teams also there was much to celebrate. The under 7 and under 8 team won the vast majority of their games as well as winning the Brecon Tournament and doing exceedingly well at Lucton. Their coach, Jason Jenkins, commented, “The boys have played really well all season, I would like to offer my thanks to the players and parents for all their support. The under 8's lost in the semi finals at Lucton and the Under 7's were beaten in the final. Well done boys we are so proud of what you have all achieved this season.”

The under nine team even outshone their younger friends by winning at both Merthyr and Brecon and reaching the final at Lucton. Their coach Thomas Jones added, “Fantastic effort getting into the final including scoring thirteen tries to set up a classic with Rhiwbina then just losing out by one try to nil to a very good side. You should all be very proud of yourselves and enjoy a much deserved rest.”

While the under ten team didn’t quite match their counterparts they had a very good season with results continuing to improve as the year progressed and with everyone looking forward to next season.

The under eleven squad followed up their successes of last year as reaching the finals in both Brecon and Lucton Tournaments and semi finalists in the Blues Cup. They continue to show that they are an outstanding group of players as coach Simon Wood acknowledged, “Just a quick message to say a huge well done to you all. Our turn will come! Thanks for giving 110% as always, we are all extremely proud of you and the way you represent the club with your behaviour & sportsmanship.
Big thanks to all the parents for your support as usual.”

At under 12 level there was a special event with the club hosting visitors from Belluno, Italy. The event and mini Tournament with the Italians and Builth was a huge success. While the older Italian visitors proved themselves to be too strong for their local opponents the Brecon team can be proud of their performance coming back strongly and scoring two cracking tries to their opponents four.

The more senior under 13 team has also shown massive improvement as the season has progressed and are now a force to be reckoned with. They too have an interesting year to come with a likely visit to Brittany next spring.

Finally the under 14 squad have continued to mature with the highlight of their year coming with victory in the Mountain Ash Tournament. This was a notable achievement which undoubtedly pleased their coaches Simon Lewis, Peter Rowlands and Dane Elliott.

The other notable individual achievements within the club went to Alex Ryan who played for East Wales under 11 in the annual fixture against West Wales: Alwyn Lee captained the Wales ‘A’ under 16’s in the Four Nations Tournament and Darran Harris played in all but the final Wales under 16 matches their Four Nations Tournament. At under 18 level Lewis Smout followed up on his under 16 caps from last year by representing Wales in his new age group. All are outstanding achievements and show what a solid foundation is being provided by the Brecon RFC Mini/Junior structure.
