BRECON RFC ANNUAL AWARDS 2008

Although the season 2007/08 was hardly one that will be long remembered as far as Brecon’s senior teams were concerned, there were a number of notable achievements. The Awards Dinner, held at the club, was well attended and provided the perfect opportunity to congratulate individuals and to give thanks.

Proposing a toast to the Club was former, Player Brigadier Rick Libbey. His speech was entertaining and enlightening with some memorable reminiscences. In addition he took time to note achievements made by the club both on and off the field. First he complemented the mini and junior teams on their successes in a range of Tournaments and in the Heart of Wales Cup competitions. He also congratulated individuals who had achieved representative selection in particular three players who gained National Honours; Lewis Smout - Wales under 16, Sam Hobbs – Wales under 20 and Gethin Davies – Wales Clubs. Although complementary he was not afraid to point that the club that there is huge potential in the club and that has yet to be realised.

Rick was pleased to be on hand to present the Don Howe Achievement Award to Lewis Smout who played for Wales in the Under 16 Four Nations Tournament held in France. Lewis was part of the Grand Slam winning team at that Tournament and is undoubtedly is a future star. His potential has been recognised at Regional level where he has been invited to join the Blues Elite Development Squad.

The Award to the team scoring the highest number of points during the season went to the 1st XV. Unsurprisingly this year the points total was modest by previous standards with the team recording a 43 to 26 points victory at Treorchy. In presenting the award Club President Ron Rowsell stated, “The win at Treorchy was outstanding. We scored six great tries in a match that was of the highest calibre and clearly illustrated the potential that is there to be built on next season.”

The remainder of the senior awards were presented by coaches Hefin Williams, Martin Keylock and the Club Chairman Norman Williams. Gethin Davies was the recipient of two of the awards (First XV Player of the Year and Top Try Scorer – 12 tries) crowning what for him has been an outstanding season. The remaining awards went to:

Second XV Player of the Year Rob Darrock
Most Promising Owen Morgan
Most Improved Matthew Watkins
Clubman of the Year Ron Rowsell

The youth section this year faired little better than their senior counterparts. Shorn of some of their senior players they were a very young side that never failed to give anything less than their best. Their experiences although hard to take after years of success at youth level will stand them in good stead as they mature. For Dan Paley it was the end of an era. After distinguishing himself as an outstanding player he moved into coaching the youth some eight years ago. In that time the club enjoyed considerable success and to show their appreciated Dan was thanked and presented with a gift.

The other Youth Awards were:

Most Improved Player Robbie Herdman
Clubman Gary Davies
Youth Player of the Year Ewan Williams

With the final act of the 2007/08 season now completed the club can look forward to the new season with renewed vigour. Training will start in July with the seniors continuing under the direction of Hefin Williams and Martin Keylock while Brian Pritchard will be joined by Tony Price who has previously successfully worked with every age group from 8 to 16. With Brian he will look to continue that success with the Youth Squad.
