BRECON RFC ANNUAL AWARDS 2007

Seniors

Although the season 2006/07 was hardly one that will be long remembered as far as Brecon’s senior teams were concerned, there were a number of notable achievements individually and at Youth Level. The Awards Dinner, held at the club, was well attended and provided the perfect opportunity to congratulate individuals and to give thanks.

Enhancing the whole proceedings was the guest speaker Iestyn Thomas, coach of Llandovery RFC. Iestyn has a long rugby pedigree having played and coached at London Welsh and Harlequins before linking up with Llandovery. Here he renewed his association with the town where he spent many years as a pupil of Llandovery College.

His speech was entertaining and enlightening giving a background to his club’s success in winning the Konica Minolta Cup against all the odds. He also took time to draw parallels between Brecon and Llandovery and although complementary to Brecon RFC was not afraid to point out that in many ways the club are underachieving. The point was well taken as it was presented in a constructive manner.

Clubman of the Year:

Iestyn was pleased to be on hand to present the award of Clubman of the Year to Ian Jones who played at Llandovery during Iestyn’s first stint at the Club. Ian has since played with Blackwood and then finally with distinction with Brecon before moving on to Coach the club during the past three seasons. Although this year on the field was not successful no one could fault Ian’s commitment and loyalty to the club and the award was a fitting tribute as he steps down from coaching.

The other senior Awards were:

  • Second XV Player of the Year - Shane Rees
  • Most Promising - Matthew Gardner
  • Most Improved - Ceri Price
  • Top Try Scorer - Alan Taylor
  • First XV Player of the Year - Gareth Owens

Youth

The youth section in contrast enjoyed a very successful season after a difficult start. With the last game of the season they were just edged out of the league title by the strong combined Builth/Gwernyfed side. Their trophy haul was enhanced as they won the Award for the Brecon team scoring the highest number of points in a match, with the match in question won by 63 points to nil. It was one of their ranks also who collected the Don Howe Award. This Award is presented annually to players who have made a notable achievement at District, County or Regional level. This year’s recipient was Owen Morgan who has represented the Blues Region with distinction.

The Youth Awards were:

  • Don Howe Award - Owen Morgan
  • Most Improved Player - Sam Hindley
  • Clubman - Dai Price
  • Youth Player of the Year - Wyn Davies

With the final act of the 2006/07 season now completed the club can look forward to the new season with renewed vigour. Training will start on Tuesday July 17th with the seniors under the direction of the new coaching team of Hefin Williams and Mark Doran while Dan Paley and Brian Pritchard will look to continue this year’s success with the Youth Squad.
