Brecon RFC 66 Ynysybwl RFC 6

Another resounding victory at home on Saturday sees Brecon RFC sitting proudly on top of the table in League 1 East.  They recorded their fourth bonus point win of the season. Brecon were in outstanding form as they put Ynysybwl to the sword by 66-6 at Parc de Pugh. The home team sored ten tries, which helped with the points difference and sees them top the table over Brynmawr who have also won every game this season with a try bonus point.  The two sides meet next week in Brynmawr.

Brecon started well and gained early dominance at the first scrum pushing the visitors off the ball on their put in and securing the first penalty of the game which unfortunately was narrowly missed and the scores remained level.  This domination at the scrum continued throughout the first half.

The visitors then mounted their first attack and it was they who came closest to scoring the first try of the game but for a last ditch tackle from Dean Gunter just short of the line.  Quick ball from the breakdown put the home side under further pressure on their own line and it took some solid defence to keep the visitors out and force the mistake which lead to a scrum and provided the opportunity for the home side to clear their lines.

The first home try started from the dominant scrum earning another penalty on half way. This was kicked to touch on the 22 and from the lineout which was executed perfectly the home side set up and drove to within 5 metres of the line before the ball was moved wide through some crisp and accurate handling putting Adam Hoskins over for the opening score of the game.

Brecon’s second try came from a turnover on their own 22 when the ball was moved quickly to full back Adam Hoskins who immediately identified the space and fully exploited it before drawing the defender and feeding winger Jake Crockett who offloaded to Captain Ewan Williams in the tackle to finish off a great counter attack try.  Dean Gunter kicked the conversion to give Brecon a lead of 12-0 after 18 minutes.

Ynysybwl’s first points of the afternoon came from the boot of their fly half on 21 minutes after the home side gave away a penalty at the breakdown making the score 12-3.

Ynysybwl then soon got back into Brecon territory with some purposeful driving play taking them into the home 22. After seemingly diffusing the pressure with a turnover the home side then sought to move the ball from deep in their own territory and got themselves into trouble and were forced to give away another penalty which was kicked making the score 12 – 6.

Brecon’s third try came from an overthrown lineout from the visitors which was caught and strongly carried by Tom Daley before some further crisp passing between forwards and backs put the ever present second row Mark Squirell over for a try which was converted by Dean Gunter making the score 19-6.

It was from another dominant scrum on the halfway line, which was won against the head, that set the platform for the next try.  After winning the scrum the ball was moved quickly to Dean Gunter who deftly released Lucas Jones with an inside pass and his break split the defence before he then passed to Eifion Jones to finish off a fantastic try under the posts which was converted by Dean Gunter to make the score 27-6.

After some solid defensive work in their own 22 the home side secured a penalty at the breakdown some quick thinking and a quick tap from Dean Gunter released Adam Hoskins in the wider channel who again exploited the space before feeding on to winger Lucas Jones who raced in from the visitors 22 to score under the posts, the conversion was successful making the score 33-6.

Just before the half time after a number of injuries to the visitors front row the game moved to passive scrums.  The home side went into the break leading 33-6 having secured the try bonus point.

Soon after half time Lucas Jones scored his second try under the posts from a slick well executed move off the back of an uncontested scrum.  Dean Gunter converted to make the score 40-6.

With a similar move, this time off the back of a lineout, Lucas Jones completed his hat trick with a try under the posts which was converted by Dean Gunter making the score 47 – 6.

After a turnover on the 10m line the ball was fed to Dean Gunter who released Adam Hoskins who drifted outside the defender and broke into the opposition 22 before delivering an inside pass to the supporting Jake Crockett who scored under the posts.  Dean Gunter converted to make the score 54 – 6

From a quick tap penalty on the 22 Deri Williams caught the defence napping and in the tackle fed a low pass inside which was delicately hacked forward by Ioan Edwards and he was narrowly beaten in the chase to the touch down by Jake Crockett to make the score 59 – 6.

Brecon saved their best try for last, this came straight from the kick off and after some slick handling to get Adam Hoskins in to the outside channel, he showed good pace to get outside the defenders and eventually fed an inside pass to Richie Elliott who ghosted past three defenders with a mazey run to finish under the posts.  Dean Gunter converted to make the final score 66 – 6.

Great credit must go to the relatively young Ynysybwl side that, despite loosing a number of players to injury during the game, kept battling and never gave up.

The Brecon coaching staff will be pleased with the progress the team are making and the way in which they are playing the game.  The acid test will come next week when Brecon travel to fellow League leaders Brynmawr.
