Brecon U13 47 - Gwernyfed U13 29

It was a fantastic sunny Sunday morning for rugby down at Parc de Pugh and our U13 ladsenjoyed putting on a show for our supporters.

Brecon got the game under way with a deep kick into the Gwernyfed 22m which then bounced into the in-goal area. Gwernyfed were able to bring the ball out but were unlucky and knocked the ball on inside their own 22m. From the scrum Matthew Williams ran through three Gwernyfed players and scored the first try, Layth Bailey converted (7-0).

Gwernyfed then got the game started and put Brecon under pressure. Brecon knocked the ball on and Gwernyfed went on the attack. Brecon did not give in easily and they defended their try line hard for four minutes before Gwernyfed were able to score, conversion missed (7-5).

The boys then went back to business and made some hard tackles forcing Gwernyfed to drop the ball. Matthew Williams was the quickest to react and he cut through the Gwernyfed defence to score under the posts, Layth Bailey converted (14-5).

Jack Celant Leach caught the ball from the restart and made good metres before being tackled. The next carry came hard and fast from Quinn Davies catching the Gwernyfed defence on the back foot and giving Brecon quick ball and Matthew Williams went over the try line to score his third try, Layth Bailey converted (21-5).

At the restart Brecon again failed to catch the ball, giving possession back to Gwernyfyd. Once again Brecon defended hard making it difficult for Gwenyfyd to break down the defensive line. Brecon did, however, give away a few penalties and were marched back into the 22m. Gwenyfed took a quick tap penalty and as the player was in the act of scoring he was driven back 5 metres. The referee called this a high tackle and awarded Gwernyfed a penalty try (21-12).

For the next few minutes Brecon worked hard with the ball, carrying and making small gains. A penalty was then awarded to Brecon for a player not releasing in the ruck and the ball was kicked into the 22m area. From this lineout the forwards caught the ball, only to be penalised for passing the ball and running into his own man. Gwernyfed then cleared the ball into touch and were able to secure the lineout ball which they moved into the back line where Brecon made some hard tackles and won the ball back at the ruck.

The ball was then moved away from the ruck and into the Brecon back line, only for Tom Scott Lowe to be tackled 5m short of the try line, however, a hard run from Tuder Forsyth allowed him to crash over just next to the posts, Layth Bailey converted (28-12).

From the restart Brecon failed to control the ball and gave Gwernyfed the ball back. Gwernyfed moved the ball to the right flank and caused Brecon to scramble in defence. They quickly switched play back to the middle and scored a fantastic try just next to the posts, try converted (28-19).

Half time.

With a quick half time talk the game was back under way with Gwernyfed kicking off.

Brecon managed to secure the ball only to lose it in the next ruck. Gwernyfed moved the ball to their left wing where they knocked on. From the scrum the ball was passed out to Brecon’s right flank and Tom Scott Lowe raced away at blistering pace and could not be caught by any Gwernyfed player, Layth converted (35-19).

From the restart Brecon caught the ball and started to get the game going again only to be caught out at the next ruck where Gwernyfed turned the ball over. Again Gwernyfed moved the ball wide only to knock on and give Brecon the scrum.

Brecon were then penalised for the hooker having his foot up too early. Gwernyfed as usual took a quick tap penalty, caught Brecon napping and scored the next try, conversion missed (35-24).

Brecon then had some luck and gained the ball back at the restart from a knock on.

At the scrum 30m out Matthew Williams picked up and scored his fourth try, conversion missed (40-24).

Brecon caught the ball from the restart and moved it again to right edge making easy metres into the Gwenyfed half. The ball was quickly moved out to the left and Matthew Williams found some space and cut through the Gwernyfed defence to score his 5th try of the match, Layth Bailey converted (47-24).

With only a few minutes to spare and in true Gwernyfed fashion they came back at Brecon to score the final try of the match; conversion missed (47-29).

Player of the match went to Matthew Williams, 5 try’s is a big ask for such a young player 🏉🏉🏉🏉🏉👍🏻.

Coaches thoughts:

The boys defended like true warriors for lots of the match. The restart area needs work on. I am really impressed with the new forward today, Will Davies, who played the whole game at hooker, well done.
