Brecon RFC v Bonymaen RFC

Saturday 14 October

Brecon continued the impressive start to their Championship West campaign with an emphatic 8 try, 55 points to 14, bonus point victory over visitors Bonymaen. This is Brecon’s fifth consecutive, bonus point victory so far this season and maintained their position at the top of the League two points clear of Narberth.

The game started well from a Brecon perspective and the home side showed their intent right from the start, the passing was accurate and sharp and they were clinical with ball in hand. The Brecon forward pack put in another fantastic performance to secure plenty of possession for the Brecon back line to create and score some fantastic tries.

It was after some powerful forward drives close to the visitor’s line that the first try was created.  After going through the phases Brecon scrum half Geraint Workman fired a flat pass to the returning Ewan Williams who split the defence to cross the line and score on his first start after returning from injury.

The second try came from a kick into the opposition 22 from Geraint Walsh which was chased by Jake Crockett and when the defender failed to secure the ball Jake gathered and crossed in the corner.

The third try came from a sniping run from Dion McIntosh who beat the defence and offloaded to the supporting Olly Lewis who crossed and scored under the posts.

The Brecon pack were able to exert their dominance over the opposition in the scrum, lineout and driving maul.  The fourth try scored by Alwyn Lee and the fifth try scored by Logan McIntosh were carbon copies with the home side kicking penalties to the corner and winning the lineout and efficiently driving the visitors over their line.

The sixth try was an excellent solo effort from Sam Jones who chased a high kick which bounced and eluded the defender and was gathered by Sam on halfway and he showed outstanding pace to run the try in and beat the chasing defender in the corner.

The seventh try was set up from a quick lineout taken by Osian Davies to Ewan Williams who caried the ball up to the visitors 22 and threw a lovely pass to Olly Lewis who unselfishly drew the final defender and passed to Ben Griffin who finished unopposed in the corner.

The final try came after some outstanding play which started in the Brecon 22 and was the best try of the day and included everything that was good about the way the team played.  After some strong driving play, crisp accurate passing, and good support it was left to Lewis Smout to bamboozle the covering defenders with a dummy and well-timed pass to put Sam Jones in for his second try.

Both kickers had a good afternoon with the boot with Dion McIntosh landing four conversions and one penalty and Jake Newman kicked two conversions.  The final score was Brecon RFC 55 Bonymaen RFC 14.

Dale McIntosh after the game said that “during the week had the focus had been on physicality and mindset, and we achieved that, our defence was outstanding and our line speed was excellent, our connections were right, and we competed hard at the breakdown which was refereed well”.

Next week the First XV and Athletic travel away to play Crymych.  This will be a stern challenge for both sides.
