Brecon Youth 45 - Gwernyfed Youth 11

In perfect autumnal conditions and with the pitch looking superb, Brecon entertained the large crowd with a seven try romp against their local rivals to progress into round two of the cup at Parc-de-Pugh yesterday afternoon. Having been involved in a close encounter with Gwernyfed in the league a few weeks ago it was Brecon who held the bragging rights with a narrow 29-20 win at Trefecca Road.

The match was somewhat of a first for most of the players as it was officiated by WRU lady referee Bianca Zietsman. Despite this being a local derby, she was complemented on her calm and consistent control of the match which was respected by both sets of players and spectators alike.

As expected, early exchanges of the match were cagey with both sides trying to gain territory. The home side had early disruption to their backs following the loss of outside half Thomas through injury but quickly got into their stride. Brecon opened the scoring on their first visit into the visitors 22 with the first try of the day for full back Tom Richards who went over after a fine midfield break by Ollie Lewis. Gwernyfed quickly responded with two well struck penalties from outside half Joe Winfield to make it 6-5 but after that it became one-way traffic. Brecon began to gain a wealth of possession and a second try from Richards after a fine set piece move off an attacking scrum and a converted try from Dan Hiscocks saw the home side lead 17- 6 at the break.

The home supporters did not have to wait long into the second half before Brecon;s continued dominance resulted in more scores. Prop Josh Hamilton crashed over after a quick tap penalty within two minutes of the restart to quash any hopes of a comeback from the visitors. Brecon now dominated in all departments, forwards creating a perfect platform for the Brecon backs to show off their pace and obvious talent, at times creating havoc in the away teams defence. Further scores were inevitable and soon Brecon scored the try of the match. In a move that started deep in their own half. Brecon gained a line-out just outside the visitors 22. Some fine handling and interplay between forwards and backs saw the ball moved wide and a delightful offload from Hiscocks near the corner saw Richards the beneficiary who went over for his hat-trick. After another lineout drive inside the Gwernyfed half, captain Josh Pritchard gained good yardage and when quick ball was created, centre Charlie East broke through to score their sixth try.

Brecon's final score came via a penalty try which again started in the home half. A barnstorming midfield run from prop Hamiltion was well supported by flanker Gervis who was hauled down just short of the line. A number of offences from the visitors defence gave the referee no option than to walk under the posts to award the penalty try to bring their total for the day to 45 points. Gwernyfed did rally and scored a late consolation try by No 8 and captain Gethin Williams but had never looked like getting back into the tie due to Brecon's superiority and solid defence.

As the final whistle blew both sets of supporters realised they had witnessed an excellent game played between two committed sides creating a thoroughly enjoyable spectacle. Although there were some notable individual performances, the whole squad must be complemented on their clinical all round team display which delighted the Brecon coaching and management team. The celebrations at the club went long into the night as news filtered through that both the 1sts and 2nds had also won their respective fixtures
