Saturday 11 November 2023

The First XV finally had the opportunity to contest their much-anticipated cup match against Bonymaen on Saturday after adverse weather conditions had forced the cancellation of the fixture on the previous two weekends. The rescheduled match carried heightened anticipation due to the delays caused by a waterlogged pitch. Fortunately, the conditions on Saturday were conducive to playing open rugby, allowing the teams to showcase their skills.

The opening half of the match was marked by a display of intense and competitive rugby. The first half saw the visiting side playing in a more open and creative way resulting in two tries, firstly for centre Tomos Davies and then Ben Griffin.  Jake Newman converted both tries.  The home side battled hard in the first half and score 13 points and at the whistle for half time the score was Bonymaen 13 Brecon 14, reflecting the competitive nature of the match.

The second half of the game witnessed both teams intensifying their efforts, with the Brecon looking to build on their first-half performance, and Bonymaen seeking to get ahead and secure a home victory. Jake Newman landed an early penalty in the second half to take the score to Bonymaen 13 Brecon 17.  Shortly after this it was the home side that scored the first try of the second half through a concerted forward effort at the scrum which saw the visiting team shown two yellow cards for collapsing the scrum and a penalty try awarded to the home team taking the score to Bonymaen 20 Brecon 17.

The visitors continued to play well despite being down to 13 men and managed to score a further try with a fantastic individual finish from winger Sam Jones. The conversion was missed, and Brecon had regained a slender two-point lead with the score at Bonymaen 20 Brecon 22.  Jake Newman kicked two further penalties in the second half to take the score to Bonymaen 20 Brecon 28.

With only minutes to go Bonymaen kicked a long-range penalty to get back within one score of the visitors and set up a grandstand finish to a pulsating game.  With the score at Bonymaen 23 Brecon 28 the home side threw everything at the visitors and looked to pinch the victory.  The Brecon defence was outstanding and repelled phase after phase of driving attacks and held out to secure a hard-fought victory with the final score of Bonymaen 23 Brecon 28

The match proved to be a gripping and closely contested battle. Both teams exhibited commendable skill, determination throughout the game. The Brecon side will look to build on this victory and address areas for improvement in the upcoming fixtures as they return to League action next weekend away at Maesteg Harlequins.

Saturday also saw two close encounters at Parc De Pugh for the Athletic and Youth sides.  The Athletic lost by 3 points in an entertaining game against Abercynon where the final score was Athletic 27 Abercynon 30.  The Youth side were playing against Pontyclun and the final score was Brecon 25 Pontyclun 31.
