Heart of Wales Under 13 Cup Final

Brecon RFC 5 – Aberdare RFC 20

The Heart of Wales Under 13 Cup Final began with Aberdare scoring two quick tries, which did not bode well for Brecon.

The first try was scored by the fly-half, a player of rare maturity and pace who both started and finished the sweeping movement which led to the score. The same player created the second score with a delicate kick to the corner for his wing to cross unopposed – an absolutely classic try.

Had Brecon buckled at this point, a massacre would have ensued, but this is a team of considerable grit and determination and a fight back was swiftly under way. Perhaps the best three quarter movement of the match was brought to an end only by a superb tackle by the Aberdare number 10; sadly Dylan Lockwood damaged a hand in the tackle and was forced to leave the field. However, Brecon continued to press until Joe Sissons danced through the defence to bring the score to ten points to five.

Despite a solid performance from the forwards in rucks Brecon backs were unable to escape from some excellent tackling, but likewise Aberdare were forced to kick or rely on wide looped passes to penetrate the Brecon defence. The main difference between the two teams lay in the fact that the Aberdare fly-half kicked with great accuracy and gained huge amounts of ground. Only a stalwart performance by James Mitchell at full back prevented several scores.

Nevertheless Brecon achieved over all parity for long periods, with Tom Lewis and Rhys Nicholls always prominent and Cellan Harries at the heart of every maul. Unfortunately in the closing quarter the Brecon line-out began to fall apart and two tries followed as a direct result of uncertainty in this phase of play, bringing the final score to 20 points to five in favour of Aberdare.

All things considered the Brecon coaches, Simon Lewis and Peter Rowlands were well pleased with the performance and felt that the whole season had seen an enormous improvement. The loyalty of the squad has been almost total; of a squad of 26 players 24 travelled to Merthyr for this final. The team have played 29 matches, winning 19, losing 9 and drawing 1. The total number of points for was 529 while conceding just 298.
