Brecon Under 11 SUNDAY 20th SEPTEMBER 2009 Brecon RFC 54 - Builth Wells 14 Following the trip to Abercynon the week previously, Brecon Under 11s returned to more familar surrounds for their first home game of the season, looking to build on the foundations of that earlier win. Parc de Pugh was bathed in sunshine as local neighbours Builth Wells were welcomed, with this game being one of a series across all the mini age groups. Coaches Paul, Alan and Ernie reminded the team of the impressive commitment and control of the previous week, and the need to build on the confidence gained from that. This clearly fell on some sleepy heads (with a number of sleep-overs having taken place over the weekend!!) as it was the vistors who managed to cross the try line first!! Following this (literal!) wake-up call, Brecon got their hands on the ball soon after and proceeded to play a game that was built on some strong running and great off-loading. The sun on their backs obviously paid dividends as Brecon played an expansive game that saw the half time whistle arrive with them leading 33-7! The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, as the late nights kicked in and Builth scored more or less directly from the kick-off! This had the same effect as the first period and Brecon kicked back into gear and really played some attractive, high skilled rugby. The second period was finished earlier as additional scores saw Brecon pass the fifty point mark. The final score was 54-14 to Brecon with the try scorers being skipper-for-the-day Dafydd Edwards (3), Llew Stephens, Thomas Witcomb, Ben Amphlett, Sammy Hellard, and Jonathan Davies with Gareth Price continuing his impressive kicking form by adding the extras. The performance was hugely impressive, and enjoyed by all friends and family who came to watch. Additionally, in spite of their own late nights (for varying reasons!) the coaches were clearly pleased by the performance of the whole squad of players, with Rowan Starkey, Rhys Evans, David Berrow and Morgan Davies also featuring strongly in the pack, and Iwan Parry, Rhodri Powell Jones, and Gus Maughan showing great adventure in their running. (Apologies if any names missing) It shows how the squad is developing when, even after a good win, the coaches are looking for areas of improvement, in this case the need for greater communication, and a return to the rucking game of the week previously. If the players continue to believe in themselves, and produce this level of performance every week, its fair to say that you will enjoy your rugby this season, and you will really grow as a rugby team!
