Brecon Under 11 SUNDAY 1st November 2009 Gwernyfed 59 - Brecon RFC 0 A Bad day at the Office! The above was a rather succinct and accurate comment that was offered at the full time whistle at the end of the Brecon Under 11s' game on Sunday at Trefecca Road! The Under 11s recent good run of form and results came to an abrupt end when they visited local rivals Gwernyfed on Sunday. The poor overnight weather had subsided to a certain extent, although there remained a strong wind throughout. Nevertheless, the players took to the field in real anticipation of a good performance, following the promise of the earlier results this season. This anticipation was tempered by the knowledge that they would be facing a strong host team, who have been setting a high standard for this age group throughout the region. It seemed that this latter point preyed on the visitors minds as they started with a certain degree of trepidation that fell into the hands of the strong running hosts, who posted an early lead within the first couple of minutes. This provided Gwernyfed with the impetus and go-forward needed to maintain a high pace and momentum throughout the first half, and they built up a commanding lead of 40-0 when the ref blew for half time. The half had been characterised by the stronger all round play of the hosts, led by the elusive and pacy running of their backs where Tomi and, particularly Jacob, set a strong example. Brecon had competed admirably at the breakdown area, although the composure on the ball was somewhat lacking. The half time words of coaches Alan and Ernie, galvanised the team into a more spirited opening of the second phase, as they pressured the hosts line for a good period of time. Gwernyfed however, showed that they had defensive mettle to add to their early attacking exploits, and they prevented Brecon from scoring what would have been a hard worked try. This turnaround in fortunes led to spirits being sapped slighlty, and this enabled the 'Green Army' to post some further scores in the second period. The final score was a convincing 59-0 to the hosts. The final whistle led to the team reflecting on what was definately one of their least effective performances for a few seasons, although this does not detract from the excellent performance of a strong Gwernyfed team. The Brecon team realise the standards and consistency that they must achieve if they are to challenge the likes of their local rivals, but the strong squad spirit will surely help them achieve this, and use experiences such as this result positively. HEADS UP!! KEEP WORKING HARD
