Brecon Mini Rugby Tournament 2012

Under 10 Group

On a day more suited to sitting by the fire, Brecon Under 10’s entered the Brecon tournament. This years tournament was going to be a tough test, but also a good benchmark, for some of the best teams in Wales were attending.

Brecon’s first game was against Rhiwbina. The game was played at fever pitch, with both teams playing hard and neither wanting to make a mistake. Chances were few and both teams played end to end but neither could break the deadlock and the game ended 0-0.

Next up for Brecon was Ystradgynlais, the boys were confident they could turn the result from earlier in the season. The Brecon boys dug deep and Louis got the first score to put Brecon into a 7-0 lead. Ystrad kept playing and as their support got louder they leveled the score. The game ended 7-7.

Brecon’s third game was against Builth. Brecon knew they must secure wins to qualify to the semi’s. The Brecon boys started gelling and finding space that had eluded them previously. Tries from Rhys, Ryan, Cai and Owain secured the win for Brecon, 33-0.

The final pool match was against Barry, in blizzard conditions Brecon kept their composure, Cai, Ryan and Rhys crossing to give Brecon the win 19-7.

The semi’s loomed, Gwernyfed topped pool 2, so Brecon would face Abercwmboi. The Brecon boys rallied once more. With great driving play from Rhodri and Rhys and with KD and Louis always close in support. Owain and Luke Price made inroads into the Abercwmboi defence only to be caught at the vital stages. Abercwmboi came back at Brecon, and great defence from Ryan, Cai and Charlie halted them. Ethan, Cynog, Luke Watts and Joseph showed great determination but eventually the deadlock was broken and Abercwmboi scored the vital try to put them into the final. Brecon 0 – Abercwmboi 7.

The final was between Abercwmboi and Ystradgynlais. This was an immensely tight match and scores were level at the end of full time and at the whistle signaling the end of the first half of extra time. With both teams tiring in the wet and heavy conditions Abercwmboi claimed the all important golden try to eventually see off their very gallant opponents. Considering the closeness of the match and the appalling conditions the two teams showed magnificent sporting spirit and were a credit to their clubs.

The Brecon boys played brilliantly today and really gave it their all in, at times, terrible playing conditions.

Well done boys fantastic tournament.
