Brecon Mini Rugby Tournament 2012

Brecon Under 11's

Brecon Under 11's Show Great Character

Easter Monday saw the traditional Brecon minis tournament take place at Parc de Pugh, held this year under somewhat damp conditions both overhead and underfoot. Despite this the day saw some excellent rugby played in all age groups with some hotly contested games

Brecon u11s began their pool game against Merthyr in what they knew would be a difficult first fixture. With 2 good tries scored Brecon looked like leading comfortably at half time but suddenly Merthyr scored to make the game close. With a pep talk from the coaches Brecon began the second half with a bang. First, a great run from midfield created a line break with the ball carrier creating and using a 2 on 1 in perfect fashion to release the try scorer; from the resulting restart a Brecon player reclaimed the ball going straight over to score. One further try resulted in Brecon winning 33-5

The next game was against Barnstaple who had come to South Wales on tour specifically to play in this tournament. Although they had lost to Llanishen first up it was clear they had some strong forwards and would contest the breakdown aggressively. Despite this Brecon had the edge out wide and the pace of the Brecon backs enabled 2 good tries to be scored with Brecon winning 12-0

Next up was one of the most keenly awaited contests of the day against Llanishen winners of this tournament in 2010 as u9s. In what was a quality game Llanishen came through by virtue of scoring the only try. The Brecon team battled hard but could not find the space that they had in previous games with Llanishen playing a rush defence and putting Brecon under constant pressure. What was impressive - and commented on by a Brecon coach from an older age group - was the quality of tackling from both sides and the Brecon team certainly put the effort in

The final pool game was a comfortable win against Llanidloes 33-0 to see the team through to a semi final against Pontypridd in a re run of last years u10s final, Ponty having cruised through their group scoring 21 tries without conceding a single score.

Once again these old adversaries put on a classic match for the spectators. With no quarter asked for or given the first half looked like ending in stalemate until Ponty scored with the last play to take a half time lead. The second half saw more ferocious tackling from both sides with Ponty coming close to extending their lead. However following excellent cover defence and aggressive driving through the ball was turnover for Brecon to score a breakaway try with the try scorer going from near his own 22 to score, by no means an easy feat in the even worsening ground conditions. So the stage was set for a grandstand finish! It was though Ponty who scored the winning try to secure the spot in the final by a score of 12-5

In the final Llanishen beat Ponty 26-0

So well played boys - again we only lost to two of the strongest teams in South Wales. It shows that all the effort you all put in in training and in matches is allowing you to compete with the best. With a tournament in Bridgend on 29th let's see if we can go one better and gain that success you all deserve for the quality of rugby you show week in week out
