Brecon RFC elects a new President

At the recent AGM, Andy Lewis was elected as President of the Club. For those of you who don’t know Andy he played for both senior sides between 1989 and 1993 before his playing career was cut short following a serious neck injury whilst playing for the First XV against Cefn Coed at Parc De Pugh in 1993.

After his accident Andy spent a few years away from the Club where focussed on his physical rehabilitation and he undertook a further research degree to enable him to get back to work.  Andy’s background is in Property Valuation, Management and Development and after his accident he focussed on advising property owners, Architects and other Clients on making new and existing buildings and external environments more accessible for disabled people. He spent 7 years working for the University of Salford and was involved in a variety of research projects looking into design of the built environment and assisted in setting up and running an online Masters course on Inclusive Design.  Alongside his role at the University Andy established his own Consultancy where he provided Inclusive Design advice and also worked on a number of projects that supported other disabled people to set up and run their own businesses. More recently Andy has spent his time carrying out research and undertaking due diligence on emerging Welsh companies to help inform investment decisions for Sunnybarn Investments Ltd.

After a period away from the Club Andy was encouraged to get more closely involved at Brecon RFC in the mini and junior rugby section when his nephew Iwan started playing for the Under 9’s and assisted the head coaches John Davies and Howell Havard.  This quickly lead to becoming involved with Paul Amphlett then Chairman of the Mini and Juniors and helping him to organise the Minis Festival which at the time was the leading minis festival in Wales.

Andy was then persuaded by the Pentre brothers, John and the late Eifion Davies to join the Club Committee which he did for a number of years up until the Club became Incorporated.  Since incorporation Andy has still been involved in the Business Department of the Club and has assisted Phil Buck with the sponsorship side of things as well as preparing the match day programme and weekly match day notes.

On his appointment as President Andy said “I was flattered to be asked by Paul and other members of the Board if I would be prepared to stand as President at the AGM and then equally honoured to be confirmed as President.  Over the years since my accident the Club has provided me with a great deal of support for which I will be ever grateful and helping out is my small way of repaying all those who have helped and supported me over the years. Brecon RFC has a great history within Welsh Rugby that we should all be proud of and look to build on as we move forward. We are very fortunate to have a very loyal and hard-working Board at present who are all prepared to muck in and help around the Club with a variety of different tasks.  They have done a fantastic job around the Club during lockdown and have ensured that our facilities and the business are in a good shape, despite the difficulties imposed on us by COVID.  We are now in a good position to hit the ground running as things open up.  They all act as volunteers and have their own day jobs away from the Club.  My first appeal as President to all our members who value the Club and what it stands for is to please think about getting involved as a volunteer and providing a few hours a week to help around the Club.  There are a variety of roles where extra help is needed so please get in touch if you would like to get involved. The success of our Club is very much dependent on the amount of effort we all put in to help out.

Finally, it is great to get back to watching rugby at Parc De Pugh and to see such a young squad of local players representing the Club at senior level and I wish the players, coaches and managers all the best for the remainder of this season”.
