Club Newsletters BRECON RFC NEWSLETTER September 2010
After what seemed a very short break the new season is already well underway. At senior level the start has been very promising with one major blot on our results sheet. Numbers in training have been good and with the influx of some new blood there seems to be more strength in depth in more positions than we have had for some time. The opening weekend of the season brought joy all round with wins for the First XV at St Peters, the Second XV at Abercwmboi and the youth at home to Gwernyfed. That set up a great local derby with Gwernyfed on the second Saturday of the season. With Gwernyfed having won their first home league match and with fair weather everything was in place for a classic encounter. From our point of view that encounter was never inspirational although, I am sure, Gwernyfed would disagree. In front of a big crowd and a host of sponsors we didn’t perform and deservedly Gwernyfed took the spoils and a winning bonus point. We were left with nothing other than a good gate an excellent evening at the Clubhouse where new steward Sharon Williams came through with flying colours. We may have looked smart in our new kit, kindly donated by a collection of team sponsors but………(censored) The second XV or as they may be known, The Barbarians, certainly weren’t overawed in their game and demolished Cefn Coed by 89 points to nil. With them also adding the scalp of Builth Wells last weekend, they have had an outstanding start to the new campaign. The youth team suffered at the hands of a big and experienced Bonymaen outfit but bounced back to lose to Llandovery by the very narrowest of margins. Not leave the senior side on a disappointing note it is pleasing to be able to record that captain Richard Galea and his First XV answered their critics in the best way possible by putting on a great display at Fairwater, defeating the previously unbeaten team and earning a bonus point in the process. Mini and Juniors For the Minis and Junior section the season is only just starting. However, there has been one notable result. The under 16’s took part in the Reuben Morgan Memorial Sevens at Merthyr during August and were losing finalists. They are a talented side and we should look forward to good season. The under 14’s are busy preparing and raising funds for their October Tour to Belluno, Italy. This is a return visit following their Italian counterparts visit in 2009. I am sure that everyone who is involved in the venture will have a great experience and judging by the performances of the Italian teams in the Magners League the home side will present a stern rugby challenge. Lottery – Floodlights The lottery draw continues every Friday. To date we have banked over £12,000 into the Club’s Development Fund. Individual Prize winners this year have collected winnings of £8,500, £3,020 and £950 respectively. The investment of just £1 could bring a great return. The club would like to thank all those who regularly contribute and encourage those who don’t to start to support this worthwhile effort. In order to make it easier for some people to participate in the lottery I am attaching Standing Order Mandate Forms together with all necessary details. If you find it easier to participate regularly in this way then please make use of the attached. All lottery profits and Vice President Donations go towards the Floodlight Development Fund. At present we are seeking a loan and trying to overcome some power supply difficulties but we are moving closer and there is confidence that our dreams will be realised in the fairly near future. Advance Notice - Vice Presidents Dinner – Garin Jenkins 3rd December I have attached details of the Autumn Vice Presidents Dinner. The dinner is open to anyone, Vice Presidents, Members, Players, and guests. Garin recently returned from his 15 captains charity hike to Kilimanjaro is well known as an after dinner speaker as well as being a legend on the rugby field. Please make every effort to attend and book your tickets early so that you will not be disappointed. Membership Membership is now due. Details and forms can be found under the DOCUMENTS – FORMS TAB or the link on the HOME PAGE screen of the website www.breconrfc.co.uk I try to keep the website as up to date as I possibly can but that is not always possible. It would be a great help if any photographs, results, reports were forwarded to me by e-mail so that I can simply transfer that information to the site.
