Dowlais RFC 0 Brecon RFC 36

On Saturday Brecon travelled over the Brecon Beacons to the Klondike to play Dowlais on a windy but dry and sunny day.  Conditions were perfect for Brecon to attempt to play their open running game.

After two resounding bonus point victories for Brecon, their opponents, even though suffering two defeats in their opening games, were expected to provide the sternest test for the Brecon team so far this season.  The home side certainly did not disappoint and their strong forward pack looked to impose themselves on the game in the early exchanges.

The home side used the strong wind well in the first half and looked to pin the visitors in their own half.  Dowlais also created problems in the early scrums for the visitors and also posed many questions of the visiting defence when their forward pack looked to drive the ball.  The visitors had to show great discipline and fortitude in defence for most of the early period of the match.  It was this solid and disciplined defence throughout the first half that frustrated the home team. The visitors line speed was excellent and any attempt by the home team to move the ball wide was halted by the pressure exerted on them.

Brecon’s first try came from an aimless kick from the hosts which was gathered and a high ball returned which was collected in the air and Adam Hoskins was released to race away to the corner to score and excellent first try.   Brecon soon extended the lead with a successful penalty kick from Dean Gunter.

The score remained at 8-0 to the visitors right up until half time when the visitors mounted an attack and after some excellent forward drives the ball popped out of a ruck and the ever-alert Ioan Edwards gathered the ball and unselfishly fed Johnny Bowen who scored under the posts.  Dean Gunter added the extra points and Brecon headed into half time with a 15 – 0 lead.

The second half really saw the visitors take control of the game and with the home sides forward pack tiring and giving away more penalties the visitors were able to maintain pressure on their opponents.  The Brecon backs were finally starting to find and exploit the gaps that started appearing in the home defence and they scored two excellent tries, which were finished by Josh Martin, Dean Gunter converted both conversions.  There was one further try for the forwards, which scored by Louis Jones and was also converted by Dean Gunter.

To their credit the home side continued to put pressure on the visitors deep in their 22 right up until the final whistle but it was the visitors defence which was excellent all afternoon that had the final say and kept the home team scoreless.

The Brecon coaching team should be extremely happy with this display that showed great character, some great open running rugby and is probably the best performance of the season so far.  This performance will be the benchmark now for the upcoming weeks for this team to continue to build upon and improve further.
