Brecon U13 - 33 - Gwernyfed U13 - 26

The home game against Gwernyfed gave us the opportunity to see if we have made any improvements from our opening game against them Sunday 19th September 2021, when we lost 42-19.

The game started with Brecon kicking off. Immediately there was clear intent from Brecon U13s to tackle hard and win the ruck. From that point Brecon had a lot of possession and pressure built. Carries from Tudor and then Sam got us over the gain line, giving the backs time and space to run into. Then carries from Quinn and Jack G generated good momentum for Tudor, only for him to be held up over the try line. From the scrum Layth attacked down the left-hand side and scored the opening try, which he converted (7-0).
The forwards secured the ball at the kick off and the Brecon backs went into attack mode with an attacking kick into space from Layth. The chase from the backs caused problems for Gwernyfed, who just managed to clear their lines only for Finley to run right back at them. The forwards secured the ball and went back to work, gaining big metres from a Jack CL run
in which he could not be taken to ground. The ball was then passed down the back line to Layth, and on to Will D who then put Tom into space. He clinically finished scoring his second try (12-0) Conversion missed.
From the kick off Brecon forwards seemed to be making easy metres and earned a lineout where the catch and drive made 10m. Matthew made a big tackle and went down with an ankle injury. Shortly after Ruan also went off injured.
With a few changes to the team, Gwernyfed were able to push back up the field into Brecon’s half. The pressure was short lived as superb defence forced Gwernyfed to go backwards and drop the ball. Brecon quickly picked up the loose ball and moved into attack. Tom raced away to score his second try. Layth converted (19-0).
From the kick off Gwernyfed quickly won the ball back and built pressure inside the Brecon 22m area but could not get over the try line to score (Halftime).
Second half.
Gwernyfed kicked off and straight away put Brecon under pressure, gaining penalty after penalty. The constant pressure led to their first try which was converted. (19-7).
From the kick off the ball went long and was touched down in the Gwenyfyd in goal area and Gwernyfed opted for a scrum on halfway. They then attacked down the left side and Brecon where penalised for a high tackle. Gwernyfed took the tap quickly and caught Brecon offside. This happened again and again and Brecon were put on a team warning. Under pressure Brecon were again penalised at the ruck and Gwernyfed again took a quick tap penalty. From the resulting intense pressure they scored their second try and conversion. Brecon were hit further as Jack CL was sent to the sin bin for 6 minutes. (19-14).
From the kick off Gwernyfed ran the ball hard into Brecon’s half but some strong defensive work involving the forwards resulted in the ball being turned over and Adam found some space on the outside. His superb link up with Tom gave him the opportunity to race away to score again for his hat trick try. Layth converted (26-14).
Gwernyfed kicked off and turned the ball over. They produced an amazing run down the wing and were only halted when Finley stepped up to make the “BIGGEST” try saving tackle of the game. However, Gwernyfed were able to maintain the pressure and eventually scored again (26-19).
The game was now in the balance but from the restart Brecon made light work of the Gwernyfed attack by tackling hard and winning the ball back. Instantly it was passed along the back line enabling Tom to weave through the Gwernyfed back line untouched and to score a remarkable fourth try. Layth converted (33-19).
With minutes to play Gwernyfed did not give up and they pushed Brecon back into their 22m and scored a hard try next to the posts (33-26).

Player of the match went to Layth for his vision in attack and ability to find space for players to run into.

Coaches thoughts:
The first half showed that we can beat any team with our intensity. The boys dug deep in the second half, where the game could have been lost but they all worked for each other to gain the win.
This second half of the season is going to bring some rewards for the hard work ALL the players and coaches are putting in.
