Another Sunday morning of tough rugby at the Parc de Pugh today. The support for the boys is growing immensely and it is much appreciated.
Monmouth kicked off to Brecon who returned the ball with a hard run into the middle of the Monmouth defence. Brecon then lost the ball at the next break down and Monmouth moved the ball to their outside centre who cut through the Brecon defence untouched to score under the posts (0-7).
From the restart Brecon kicked deep into the Monmouth half and they knocked the ball on. At the scrum Matthew Williams picked the ball up from 8. He got outside the flanker and out-paced the fullback to score his first try, Layth Bailey converted (7-7).
From the restart Brecon ran the ball back well but couldn’t retain the ball at the break down and Monmouth came away with it, moving the ball to their centres again who linked up well together and scored in the corner, conversion missed (7-12).
Brecon restarted the game and Monmouth came charging back at Brecon who were missing lots of tackles. Monmouth were carrying the ball well with their forwards and then linked up with their backs who cut though the Brecon midfield defence to score under the posts again, try converted (7-19).
From the restart Brecon’s heads went down and Monmouth hit back with another quick score in the corner, conversion missed (7-24).
With a few minutes left in the first half Brecon looked like they had at last sprung into life and started making the tackles they were missing early in the first half. They pushed Monmouth back in attack and made them work, to keep retention of the ball.
Halftime.
Brecon got the second half under way and Monmouth returned the ball with interest, only to be tackled into touch near the halfway line. At the lineout Brecon got the driving maul going and quickly found some space in the Monmouth defence. The Brecon forwards carried and secured the ball well on multiple occasions making it hard for Monmouth to defend, Jack Celant Leach went crashing through the Monmouth defence to score his try, Layth Bailey converted (14-24).
Brecon seemed to have found some confidence and from the restart they carried into the Monmouth half only to lose the ball at the break down. A Monmouth player picked up the ball, only to be tackled hard and he knocked the ball on. At the scrum Matthew Williams picked the ball up at 8 and sprinted away to score his second try, Layth Bailey converted (21-24).
From the restart and now with confidence high the Brecon forwards made light work of the Monmouth defence. They made easy metres into the Monmouth half. With the Brecon forwards leading the way, the Brecon back line had space to run into. Pinning the Monmouth defence on their own try line to allow Tudor Forsyth to crash through to score the next try, Layth Bailey converted (28-24).
At the restart Brecon had a lapse in concentration and Monmouth quickly had the ball within the Brecon 22 metre area. They carried hard and their forwards made the way over the Brecon try line to score, conversion missed (28-29).
Brecon restarted the game kicking long into the Monmouth half. Monmouth tried to take the ball around the Brecon defensive line only to be tackled into touch again.
Brecon secured the ball from the lineout and drove the Monmouth defence back. The ball was then released to Layth Bailey and with some fancy foot work he found some space to score the winning try, Layth Bailey converted (35-29).

Player of the match went to Layth Bailey. He was team captain today and he lead the team all over the pitch. His conversion won the game for us today, with both teams scoring 6 try’s each.

The game was definitely a tale of TWO halves and with the lack of concentration in the first half the boys had to work hard to claw it back in the second half.
