Abercynon 2nd XV 3 - Brecon 2nd XV 27

After a period of inactivity stretching back to February 7th Brecon’s second XV made a welcome return with a friendly match against Abercynon 2nd XV. Brecon’s second XV has had a successful season with 9 wins, one draw and just two defeats to date. They are placed third in the Rhondda East Glamorgan league and have qualified for the final of the Keith Jones Cup. That final match against Mountain Ash will be played on Sunday 26th April at Rhydyfelin.

With league places to play for and with the Cup final in their sights Brecon desperately needed to get some match time under their belts. The offer of a friendly fixture under lights at Abercynon was, therefore, most welcome.

On a calm and dry evening the two teams served up an entertaining match which was a credit to rugby at second team level. Both teams were eager to run with the ball and with a sympathetic referee the game was allowed to flow.

In the early stages Brecon looked rather rusty but they quickly got into their stride and the young team got stuck into their task with great enthusiasm. A number of players stood out both for their work rate and skills. Deri Williams at scrum half was a constant threat on the break and his service to partner Matthew Watkins, who steered the team effectively, was excellent. In the back row young Josh Millichap impressed with his work rate and energy and it was pleasing to see that his efforts were rewarded with a try in each half. His partner in the back row, Dai Price, also had a good game and as one of the more experienced players on the field led the pack well. Another who showed up well particularly with his driving play in the loose during the second half was prop Jake Powell Thomas. His carrying in mid field was effective and kept his team going forward.

At half time Brecon had established a good lead with the score at 12 points to 3 in their favour. Josh Millichap claimed the first try before Dai Price was driven over to increase Brecon’s lead. With Matthew Watkins kicking a conversion and with the only reply from their opponents being a penalty Brecon were well pleased at half time.

During the second half they completely took control of the game and scored some lovely tries. The first came at the end of flowing move when Robin Cheney powered his way over in the corner. With Brecon mostly on the front foot another score was inevitable. This time forwards and backs combined to create space on the left and Josh Millichap claimed his second touch-down with a try in the corner.

Brecon’s fifth and last try was a complete contrast to the previous team efforts. Aaeron Evans made a break in mid-field on half way. He split the home defence and arched on the outside, outstripping the home defence in a 60 metre run to the line. His great individual score brought an end to a most satisfying evenings work.
